Piran is made for sunsets. With its west-facing waterfront, historic bell towers and views across the Adriatic Sea, there are plenty of places to watch the day end — from easy seaside spots to panoramic viewpoints above the town. These are some of our favourite places to watch the sunset in and around Piran, each offering a different perspective.

At the very tip of Piran’s peninsula, Punta Lighthouse is one of the simplest — and most atmospheric — places to watch the sunset. Here, the Old Town gives way to open Adriatic views, with boats passing offshore and the horizon stretching almost uninterrupted in front of you.
Come for an easy evening stroll through Piran and stay as the waterfront turns golden. On clear days, the changing light over the sea can be just as beautiful after the sun has disappeared.
Why we like it: For the feeling of being right at the edge of Piran, surrounded by sea and open sky.
Best for: Seaside atmosphere · easy access · couples · photography
Local tip: Don’t leave as soon as the sun disappears. Stay for blue hour, when the sky softens, and Piran’s waterfront lights begin to come on.

For one of the widest views over Piran, head uphill to the historic Town Walls. From above, the red roofs of the Old Town stretch towards the Adriatic, with St George’s Church, the peninsula and the sea all forming part of the panorama.
Sunset adds another layer to the view as the rooftops catch the last warm light and the horizon changes colour beyond the town.
Why we like it: Few places show the shape and setting of Piran as clearly as the Town Walls.
Best for: Panoramic views · photography · first-time visitors
Local tip: Arrive before sunset rather than exactly at sunset. The walk is uphill, and you’ll want time to enjoy the view before the light begins to change.
The hill around St George’s Church offers one of Piran’s most characteristic views: terracotta rooftops below, the Adriatic beyond and the church’s historic architecture framing the scene. It feels elevated without taking you far from the heart of the Old Town.
The changing evening light makes this especially beautiful around sunset, when the roofs warm in colour and the sea begins to reflect the softer tones of the sky.
Why we like it: It combines Piran’s architecture, rooftops and sea in a single view.
Best for: Old Town views · architecture · photography · romantic walks
Local tip: Walk around the church rather than stopping at the first viewpoint — the perspective changes surprisingly quickly as you move around the hill.
You don’t need to climb above Piran for a beautiful sunset. The waterfront around Fornače offers open views across the Adriatic and a more relaxed way to watch the evening unfold, especially if you prefer a seaside walk to a viewpoint.
It’s particularly pleasant when the day begins to cool, with the sea beside you and Piran’s historic centre just a short walk away.
Why we like it: It turns sunset into part of an evening walk rather than a destination you have to reach.
Best for: Easy access · seaside walks · relaxed evenings
Local tip: Walk towards Piran as the light changes rather than staying in one place — you’ll get several different perspectives along the waterfront.

Sometimes the best sunset view isn’t about looking directly at the sun. From Piran’s higher streets and viewpoints, the evening light spreads across the terracotta roofs, church towers and façades of the Old Town while the Adriatic forms a blue backdrop beyond.
This is one of our favourite ways to experience sunset in Piran: turn away from the horizon for a moment and watch the town itself change colour.
Why we like it: The sunset becomes part of Piran rather than simply a view over the sea.
Best for: Photography · architecture · Old Town atmosphere
Local tip: Look in the opposite direction from the setting sun. The warm light falling across Piran can sometimes be more photogenic than the sunset itself.
For one of the most complete — yet surprisingly little-known — views of Piran, follow Oljčna pot into the hills above the town. From here, the entire peninsula unfolds below you, from Punta Lighthouse at its tip to the historic Town Walls above the Old Town, with the Adriatic stretching beyond.
It’s one of our favourite viewpoints around Piran precisely because many visitors never discover it. Come towards sunset, and you can watch the changing light sweep across the whole town rather than seeing Piran from just one side.
Why we like it: Few viewpoints capture Piran so completely — the lighthouse, Old Town, church, walls and Adriatic all come together in one panorama.
Best for: Panoramic views · photography · quieter sunsets · discovering Piran beyond the obvious
Local tip: Give yourself enough time to reach the viewpoint before sunset. The walk is part of the experience, and arriving early lets you watch the light gradually change across the entire peninsula.
Aim to arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset, especially at popular viewpoints such as the Town Walls or St George’s Church Hill. The light begins changing well before the sun reaches the horizon, and arriving early gives you time to find your favourite view without rushing.
Don’t leave immediately afterwards. On clear evenings, some of Piran’s most beautiful colours appear during the 10–20 minutes after sunset, when the sky softens, and the lights of the Old Town begin to glow.
Choose Punta Lighthouse if you want to be close to the sea, Oljčna Pot Street for the widest panorama, and St George’s Church Hill for rooftops and Old Town atmosphere. For an easy evening stroll, follow the waterfront, while Oljčna pot is our local favourite for a quieter viewpoint and one of the most complete panoramas of Piran.
Whichever spot you choose, leave yourself time to linger. In Piran, sunset is less about catching one perfect moment and more about watching the town slowly change — from golden façades and glowing rooftops to the first lights appearing along the Adriatic.
From scenic walks and swimming spots to sunset viewpoints, restaurants and local food traditions, Piran rewards those who explore beyond the obvious.
